Extended Abstract:

From cloud-based resources and wearable technologies to augmented and virtual reality and autonomous vehicles, a steady stream of technological advances will continue to impact learning in unexpected ways. Can a student learn while commuting in an autonomous car?  We will explore this question and other questions related to the intersection of the latest technology trends in higher education and how they will impact the online and traditional classrooms while focusing on student-centered learning and heutagogical practices.

Emerging technologies support heutagogy by making learning more pervasive and ubiquitous, giving learners more opportunities to determine what, where, when and with whom learning takes place. The concept of heutagogy expands our current thinking of pedagogy and andragogy to look at self-determined learning. Connecting information from a variety of fields and individuals is necessary to add depth and breadth to the self-determined learner's knowledge base. As educators, we can create the curiosity to find and explore connections between many sources while using emerging technologies that can lead learners to new knowledge and enhanced learning.

Workshop participants will actively engage in dsicussions and activities that will lead to the following outcomes:

  1. explore the most recent trends and new learning technologies
  2. explore the definitions, continuum, and characteristics of pedagogy, andragogy, and heutagogy and the impact on student-centered teaching strategies
  3. participate in activities that will exemplify the characteristics of heutagogical approaches to learning
  4. discuss how the technologies being showcased can benefit the self-determined learner and accomplish specific desired learning outcomes using student-centered strategies

Participants are asked bring their own mobile device to use during the workshop. A website will be designed with robust information for the participants to explore during the workshop, as well as being a take-a-way to share with colleagues at their campuses for review and evaluation prior to the purchase or inetgration of technologies at their own institutions.   Further reseach and readings for contined learning after the workshop will be provided via the website for participants to explore through their own self-determined learning journey.  Strategies designed to keep students at the center of decision-making for technology strategies and adoption will be a focus throughout the workshop.
