Removing the "A" from Asynchronous Learning: Building Instructor Presence and Community in Online Courses

Abstract: 

Asynchronous collaboration has been the traditional way for engaging students in their online courses; however, as technology has evolved, other opportunities have emerged to increase student engagement in the online environment. Participation and engagement have shown to be critical components of effectiveness within online courses. This presentation will cover methods, strategies, and technologies that can be used in online courses to promote presence, and drive engagement.

Asynchronous collaboration has been the traditional way for engaging students in their online courses; however, as technology has evolved, other opportunities have emerged to increase student engagement in the online environment. Participation and engagement have shown to be critical components of effectiveness within online courses. This session focuses on tools that can be leveraged in online courses to increase student engagement and participation. This presentation with cover methods, strategies, and technologies that can be used in online courses to promote presence, and drive engagement; thus, creating quality interactions that lead to participation, learning and a sense of community. This session will provide insights and support for attendees, including education leadership and faculty for creating methods and employing strategies for interaction and collaborative learning, putting it at the core of online education. Attendees will have an opportunity to engage in rich discussion, answer poll questions, and share their experiences.
