As more and more students choose to mix on-ground and online courses within a term, it is not clear what impact this kind of blending will have on their progress and success. This session will present the results of recent research regarding blending course modalities and will discuss the implications.
While practice and research indicate that fully online students persist and graduate at a lower rate than all on-ground students, it is less clear what impact mixing modalities has on student progression and completion.
With more than 20 million student records in the Civitas Learning data sets, representing over 7 million active students, we have the ability to dive deep into the question. The predictive models we build for each institution allow us to also assess and understand many of the characteristics that are contributing to student persistence risk. We are also able to look across hundreds of variables in exploring the correlation between course modalities and student persistence.
This session will discuss the core methodology and data science underlying the research, and will present the overall findings. Ample time will be made for discussing the implications for institutions regarding advising, online course offerings, and scheduling.
