Abstract:

Are you interested in learning how a course map can facilitate the course planning process and the documentation of learning outcomes? This session will give attendees insights of how to create a course map and work effectively with subject matter experts in order to create a high quality online course.

Extended Abstract:

Communication between Instructional Designers and subject matter experts/instructors is key to create a high-quality online course. Yet, so many times we as Instructional Designer and Course Developers find it hard to communicate with each other and convey ideas and material into an online course. In this session, we will introduce a simple yet powerful document to attendees. The course map is an internal document provided to subject matter experts/instructors for course planning and organization purpose. The course map also serves as evidence for SACS in the course planning process and the documentation of learning outcomes.

In general, the course map template is a more detailed course outline broken down in module sections. Within each module section, subject matter experts/instructors will provide module objectives and outline course materials, assignments, assessments and discussions with descriptions that contextualizes each item in the module. They will provide assignment due dates and assessment point values. The Instructional Designer will then convey material and ideas presented in the course map and build a high-quality online course.

By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of a course map by identifying key parts of it
  • Improve communication with subject matter experts/instructors by implementing a course map
  • Create a course map template to facilitate course development of a high-quality course
