Abstract:

Complementary - not competing - programs.   Managing a healthy online portfolio across a system of institutions requires leadership collaboration across campuses.  This session presents a process for chief academic officers across a system to review online degree proposals to ensure that online degree offerings provide multiple pathways for students.

Extended Abstract:

Complementary - not competing - programs.  As institutions engage in online learning partnerships across campuses, it is critical to ensure that these partnerships both balance the overall portfolio of the partnering institutions and enhance learning opportunities for online learners.  System leadership recognized that ensuring healthy online enrollments at each campus required collaboration to ensure that the system was not internally competing for the same student populations.  A review process was created for the chief academic officers at each institution in the system to review program proposals.  By working together, the leadership team ensures that new programs are launched at the optimum campus to facilitate success, eliminates competition throughout the system, and creatively designs pathways for continuous learning for online students.  This session describes the process by which one division of online learning developed a systemwide collaborative effort, the method by which faculty submit proposals, and explores how the interaction among the campuses leads to a more intentional development of a robust online portfolio.  Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss processes at their own institution and explore ways to encourage greater collaboration among faculty and administrators when launching new online programs within a system.
