Extended Abstract:

This presentation will address the challenges facing colleges and universities of declining overall enrollments while online enrollments have been growing. It will review results for a formal study conducted by EducationDynamics and will address the unique needs and demands of online students to give institutions a better understanding to serve them.

This discussion will focus on the shifts in the last 5 years in the demographics of students, with more individuals starting their careers before earning a full degree. We present the data from the Online College Student Report which provides insights into the challenges and characteristics of online students so that schools can invest in online program offerings.

Speakers will include David Bayley, Vice President of Partnership Development at EducationDynamics and Dean Goon, Dean of Academic Innovation at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. David will discuss the most recent trends in the social, demographic, and economic shifts concerning the modern student. Dr. Goon will focus on industry trends of user experience and personalization that apply to online learning.

Schools need to understand what motivates online students, what challenges they face, what platforms have changed, and how they differ from traditional students in order to customize the messaging that meets their needs. This information can help schools improve their online courses by humanizing learning and personalization.
