Shifting from event-based faculty development to strategic development, an online teaching competencies framework was developed through thematic analysis of the literature, iterative refinement, and stakeholder input. This resulted in seven online teaching competencies and 45 sub-competencies. The competency framework was used to create a curriculum for faculty development.
In this session, participants will learn how an online course design and faculty development unit at a large university innovated to shift from event-focused online faculty development to a strategic, competency-based approach. This session will benefit all audience levels, particularly administrators, instructional support, and training professionals. It will be of particular interest to those looking to develop a faculty development curriculum based on a competency framework. The challenges discussed include: developing a vision, mission, and goals for the unit; developing a set of online teaching competencies; utilizing the competencies to create a curriculum; planning the development of a pipeline of eight online teaching and course design certificates; managing a three-year rollout plan; creating systems to track participation and certificate completion; and creating a marketing strategy for the program.
Participants will be engaged through interactive slides and opportunities to ask questions at the end of the presentation. A toolkit for creating a competency-based, strategic online faculty development program will be provided. The toolkit will include: a Creative Commons licensed copy of the Online Teaching Competency framework, a template of the curriculum map based on the online teaching competencies, and a template of the strategic plan for rolling out the competency-based faculty development program. Participants will also be asked to provide feedback on the implementation of the program as it enters year-two of this three year plan.
