Abstract: 

I operate two YouTube channels focused around math with more than 21,000 subscribers and over 2 million views. Teaching math via YouTube has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and I will teach others how to launch a math channel and create quality content.

Extended Abstract: 

The presentation will begin with an overview of my experience planning and developing content for my YouTube channels. I will then share the various styles of videos that I make: (1) livestream walkthroughs for test prep, (2) polished tutorials for critical concepts, (3) math puzzles for curious learners, and (4) math music videos to help teach formulas. I will then explain how teachers can create their own videos with minimal technical expertise. The key questions that will be answered are as follows: 1) how to start a YouTube channel, 2) how to plan content, 3) how to use an online whiteboard and Wacom tablet, 4) how to livestream 5) how to edit videos using Final Cut, and 5) how to be effective on camera. Time will be allocated in the following manner: 10 minutes explaining the structure and layout of my channels, 5 minutes showing the impact of connecting with students globally via YouTube, and the remaining 45 minutes teaching the technical aspects of launching a YouTube channel.

The presentation will begin with an overview of how to plan and develop a math focused YouTube channel. I will share videos that have been particularly successful, detailing precisely why certain pieces of content tend to resonate more so than others. After demonstrating the potency of this pedagogy, I will explain how teachers can create their own videos with minimal technical expertise. The key questions that will be answered are as follows: 1) how to use an online whiteboard, 2) what additional hardware is needed to draw effectively on a computer, 3) how to take screen recordings, 4) how to merge video and screen recordings, 5) and how to design an effective YouTube channel. 

Creating a math based YouTube channel can level the playing field by empowering students without resources for private tutors by allowing them free access to high quality educational content while at home. The added benefit of this particular learning vehicle is that it can be completely in sync with class lectures and personal teaching styles. Secondly, it enables students to move through material at an individual pace as this setup obviates the need for standard lock-step lectures.

My YouTube channels cover a wide array of math topics, from math puzzles to standardized test prep.  As such, this talk is more about enabling teachers to connect with both their students as well as the world at large regarding mathematics. The bulk of the presentation will include technical and strategic information for math teachers seeking to plan and develop a robust math based YouTube channel that will allow for greater access, individualized pacing, and flipped learning.
