Using Two-way Communication Between Students and Instructors to Bridge Transactional Distance: Experiences of Online Full Time Faculty

Abstract: 

Online students sometimes feel disconnected from the online classsroom because of the transactional distance. Instructors are using technology to have two-way communication with their online students, which gives them more of a connection and helps ease student anxiety and issues in the classroom.

Extended Abstract: 

Online students sometimes feel disconnected from the online classsroom because of the transactional distance. Instructors are using technology to have two-way communication with their online students, which gives them more of a connection and helps ease student anxiety and issues in the classroom. This presentation will add to the online teaching toolbox by showing how an investment in allowing two way digital communication with students leads to higher student success and student satisfaction. Presenters will share student feedback and step-by-step instructions for using technology for tw-way communication. Participants will be actively engaged through use of pair-share and poll everywhere. Participants will leave the presentation with new ideas and tools to apply in the online classroom as well as realistic pros and cons of adopting these procedures.
