Innovating from the Inside: Leading change within your organization

Audience Level:

Institutional Level:
Higher Ed
Special Session:
Leadership
Abstract:

It's an old maxim about innovation: People inside the organization often see the next big thing coming, then have difficulty being heard or driving real change. In this session, participants will explore and share insights focused on how to lead change and innovation within their organizations.

Extended Abstract:

In this we will explore the Case of The New Program Model. Participants will be presented with details involving a young designer/administrator as she attempts to get her department and college to adopt a new online program model. Participants will be asked to problem solve using a think-pair-share model to address the case subject’s dilemmas, then share their findings with the larger group. Once participants have had the opportunity to share their solutions, we will compare them to practices uncovered in Everett Rogers’ work on the diffusion of innovations (specifically characteristics of innovations, adopters, and organizations; adoption strategies; communication channels; and the role of social systems/networks). This session is meant to generate ideas and discussion around helping people within higher education institutions implement and execute their plans and moving ideas into practice. The agenda runs as follows

  • Introductions – 5-7 min

  • Presenting the Case – 10 min

  • Paired discussion – 10 min

  • Group share – 10 min

  • Reflection & Rogers’s findings – 20 min

  • Final thoughts/takeaways – 20 min
