Abstract:

Learn how a recent research-project is helping one school make evidenced-based decisions and translate the findings into new practices related to experiential learning throughout the curriculum.

Extended Abstract:

This workshop intends to walk participants through a recent research project that was designed from the outset to solve a real problem with regard to online courses.  Participants will hear about both the various hurdles and successes that are inevitable to any research project. But, more importantly, participants will discover how research can result in evidenced-based decisions where findings are being translated into new practices in the curriculum.

Workshop Learning Outcomes – Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify current challenges or goals in their own organization for which evidenced-based research can be utilized.
  2. Develop an organized approach for meeting these challenges or goals.
  3. Design research that will yield the evidence on which decisions can be made.
  4. Create an action plan for successful implementation of new practices.

Opportunities will be created for attendees to participate during the workshop such as: discussing shared experiences or brainstorming ideas for implementation. There will also be time for Q&A. Participants will leave with ideas on how to develop a process for evidenced-based decision-making. Although this particular project surrounds the experiential learning in online curriculum, the applications are much broader than that. Primary beneficiaries of this workshop are educational practitioners such as: deans, chairs, program directors, or faculty that help lead online programs, curriculum, or courses. Educators who are interested in how to incorporate experiential learning as an embedded model throughout their curriculum will also benefit. Graduate students who are considering how research can become part of professional practice may also benefit.

The workshop will flow as a back and forth between lecture-style presentation and discussion between participants.
