This workshop demonstrates an active learning exercise for teaching students critical thinking skills, searching and using OER, assessing OER and other sources, and attributing OER in course work. During the session, participants will observe a demonstration of the lesson then remix the activity for their own course or teaching discipline.
The aim of the session is to engage learners in remixing and reusing open education resources (OER) to enhance course concepts and critical thinking. The demonstration will invite attendees to participate in an interactive game of “Join or Die!” adapted from the television show aired on the History Channel to demonstrate how the activity may be used as an instructional tool for remixing and reusing open education resources (OER) in the classroom. The lesson demonstration will have participants explore "Which are the most relevant skills needed for employment in the fourth industrial revolution which includes developments in artificial intelligence and machine-learning, robotics, nanotechnology, 3-D printing, and genetics and biotechnology?"
Section Objectives:
- analyze and evaluate OER and other sources, information, and data
- explain copyright, Creative Commons licensing, plagiarism, and source attributions
- define and describe OER
- identify cultural bias in OER and other sources
- demonstrate methods for remixing and reusing OER
- explore learner-centered approaches using technology in the classroom
