An Adaptive, Fun, and Relevant Data Analysis Assignment for Your Online Courses

Abstract: 

We are excited to show you how to utilize a free (academic use) tool for online data analysis assignments. We've been using this assignment in our MIS course and have refined to achieve ideal learner engagement. Student feedback has been positive. This tool is adaptive and easy to implement.

Extended Abstract: 

The assignment highlighted in this presentation was designed to improve learner engagement within a mixed-major course. Coupling the personal interests of students (exploratory) with an effective data analysis technique has helped increase engagement and interest in MIS for students. The technologies we used are readily available for faculty and students to use.

Repeating 10-minute presentation with the following talking points:

1. Purpose of the tool (1 minute)

Provides a student-centric approach to applying concepts learned in MIS.

2. Assignment description (1 minute)

The assignment guides students through personalized data collection, analysis, and dashboards/reporting.

3. Tool demonstration (5 minutes )

The techniques will be demonstrated live at the conference.

4. Examples of completed projects (2 minutes)

An overview of the diversity of completed student projects using the design.

5. Possible implementations, including research and integration with Dedoose Qualitative Data Analysis Software (1 minute)

A description of where to find the tools and other ways we have used this design.

Handouts will be provided detailing how to access the tool and a getting started guide. Presenter contact information for follow-up questions and support will also be provided.
