Abstract:

In the era of new learning and continuous innovation of instructional practices, institutions need to invent, or, in some cases, re-invent their center for faculty support into a space that drives innovation from the faculty versus for the faculty. See how it's being done at Rush University in Chicago, and collaborate with us on impactful implementation strategies.

Extended Abstract:

The objectives of this session are:

  • experience one university's journey to developing a Center for Teaching Excellence and Innovation
  • discover methods of including faculty in all aspects of teaching center creation
  • recommend methods to increase faculty utilization of and participation in the Center
  • compile a list of ideas related to what types of services and training to offer as well as ideas for marketing and engaging activities for all stakeholders

Rush University did not have a center dedicated to supporting faculty in their educational technology/online education pursuits. The development of such a center began in January of 2018 and the initial 30 minutes of this session will describe the process, which was very faculty-driven. The space that houses the Center will be undergoing significant renovations that will be complete by the time of the conference and those before and after shots will also be included so that participants can get a feel for how the new Center focuses on the faculty experience.

The staff members of the Center for Teaching Excellence and Innovation (CTEI- pronounced 'city') at Rush University in Chicago will share how we created the center, named the center, and significantly increased faculty support and buy-in of such a teaching and innovation center.

During the reflection time we will ask participants to think about different activities that can bring faculty in to the Center to increase utilization of the services, or different services we might offer, or methods of marketing services.  After reflection, we will have participants go to tables marked, "services", "activities", "marketing", and "training" to have the groups brainstorm ideas for increasing participating in the Center.

The groups will add their ideas to a Google Doc that will be shared with all participants.
