Extended Abstract:

Positive Education Goes Mainstream is your chance to get up close and personal with Positive Education. The International Positive Psychology Association Educational Division (IPPAed), based in Melbourne, Australia, and the International Positive Education Network (IPEN), based in London, England have teamed up with YOUTH Positive, based in Northern Nevada, to present the cutting edge research on why Positive Education is changing the face of education around the world. These three organizations bring you the first presentation of its kind and offer the What, the Why, and the How-To of Positive Education.

Among the goals of Positive Psychology, specifically Positive Education, we find these:

  • To promote the science of positive psychology, specifically positive psychology in education, and its research-based applications.
  • To facilitate collaboration among researchers, teachers, students, and practitioners of positive education around the world and across academic disciplines.
  • To share the findings of positive psychology with the broadest possible audience.

At the core of Positive Education is the belief that every student should have the knowledge and life skills to flourish and contribute to the flourishing of others. Our goal is to create a society where everyone is able to fulfill their potential and achieve both success and well-being. Every institution in society has a moral obligation to promote human flourishing, and none more so than those responsible for educating young people—families, schools and universities.

The International Positive Psychology Association Education Division (IPPAed) and the International Positive Education Network (IPEN) are globally connected face-to-face with educators, policy-makers, practitioners and agents of change of all levels of education. YOUTH Positive, a curriculum design and educational consulting organization, put the research into practice and created a K-12 Positive Education curriculum and world-class teacher training program to support both students and educators around the world in achieving the goal—all students and their teachers will explore, develop, and live their own unique genius and thereby contribute to human flourishing.

In this creative, interactive, and research-based session, participants will engage with the presenter, the material, and fellow participants through a number of techniques including partner activities, audience participation and contribution, a game, and interactive question and answers. They will be inspired by new thoughts. They will take away concrete skills and new activities for their students. Participants will be well-prepared with a lesson they can use tomorrow in the classroom with their students, be the Kindergarteners or 12th graders.

The session will highlight the latest research and application of Positive Education and encourage participants to tailor the information to their own organization/school/classroom. It will also provide participants with an online library of resources, a clearing-house of sorts, as well as practices being used around the world, in almost every educational setting and level.
