This session will brainstorm how to take existing class assignments and projects and move them into an open pedagogical framework. Using already published examples and examples from the authors' own classes as a jumping off point, the discussion will focus on the promises of open pedagogy and how to move into it.
This conversation will attempt to engage with the full potential of the OER movement and the Five R's (Retain, Reuse, Revise, Remix, and Redistribute) in a way that retools the "Disposable Assignment" (an assignment that adds no value to the world) into an assignment that adds something of value.
Using the article "How to Use Wikipedia as a Teaching Tool" and examples from the authors' own classes, participants are invited to take part in a brainstorming discussion where the question, "How do I teach using open pedagogy?" is examined in detail. Using their backgrounds in Psychology and English, facilitators will breifly share their successes and challenges in moving beyond disposable assignments and toward open pedagogy.
