Learner Experience Design Through Storyboarding

Audience Level:
All
Institutional Level:
Higher Ed
Abstract:

The aim of this session is to illustrate how a storyboard can be used to improve the learner’s experience within a course by helping us develop the navigation, pacing, and alignment as well as identify and develop opportunities for branching.

Extended Abstract:

In this session we will define what a course storyboard is by comparing it to the storyboards used in product and user experience design. We will also demonstrate the advantages of developing a course storyboard and how it can be used to illustrate navigation, pacing, and alignment in a course as well as identify and develop opportunities for branching. We will share common challenges that storyboards can help identify and provide solutions to those challenges.

Participants will be given templates for developing their own course storyboards and share what they’ve created with a partner to gather feedback and learn the importance of seeing a course layout from others’ points of view. We anticipate that participants will be able to use their storyboards in their own courses or use them as examples to share with their colleagues who are teaching online or hybrid/blended courses.

By the end of the session, participants should be able to:

  1. Craft a fully-developed storyboard based on learner experience design principles

  2. Recognize areas where improvements in navigation, pacing, and alignment can enhance the learner experience
