Abstract:

If students passed a test, but their teacher didn't tell them the information from the front of the room, did they really learn? Yes, because students were provided an active way to learn! Experience innovative strategies and tools to replace traditional passive content delivery during this hands-on workshop.

Extended Abstract:

In this fast-paced and hands-on workshop, attendees will participate as students to actively experience multiple innovative strategies and tools replace traditional content delivery in online, hybrid, or flipped classes. Participants, be they educators, administrators, or technologists, will need their laptops and work in small groups to try each strategy or tool and discuss their effectiveness. The workshop will allow attendees to focus on student learning while they identify the best solution for their own classes or institutions. As a summary, reports and data from some of the strategies used during the workshop will be used to drive a whole-group discussion and answer questions.

Objectives include:

  1. Identify multiple alternative strategies and tools to replace passive content delivery (lecturing/telling) for use in online, hybrid, or flipped classes.
  2. Determine the effectiveness of each alternative to promote student learning.
  3. Weigh the pros and cons of each alternative in terms of ease of use, cost, and scalability.
  4. Create a summary of each alternative (using one of the tools presented, of course) to reference at home.

A wide variety of strategies and tools will be experenced to replace traditional content delivery and will involve videos, reading, open content, Google apps, software, collaboration, and various web resources.
