Abstract:

How can we encourage students to be global citizens and productively use technology in the ever-changing, tech driven world that we live in?

Extended Abstract:

What can you do to contribute globally in a "tech minute"? Our classrooms and students are inundated with multiple global issues on a daily basis and our students want to and should be involved in the conversations and solutions happening around them. However, with how fast the world is moving with technology and media, students need to learn effective ways to be a part of those converstaions and problem solving situations. Participants will engage in a discussion about how to use technology and different technology resources in the most meaningful way to help students make an impact in their communities and their world around them. This is not necessarily an easy question with easy answers but rather provides a starting point to discuss the 21st century curriculum that our students need in addition to their standard curriculum for which school is traditionally responsible. Questions to be explored include, "How do you handle sensitive cultural and global issues in the classroom?", "Should certain global issues be censored depending on age range?", "How can social media be used to safely explore these global issues in the classroom and what are the downfalls of social media?", "How can students utilize technology to engage in these global conversations and collaborate with others?". and "In what ways can technology assist or hinder progress on these global issues?".
