Abstract:

Findings from a study entitled Student Perception of Teacher Empathy, High Regard and Genuineness and the Impact on Student Engagement were presented at the 2017 Innovate Conference. This Conversation not Presentation session asks participants how to convey empathy and high regard via technology, assignments and feedback.

Extended Abstract:

Bockmier-Sommers, Chen and Martsch (In press) explored whether student perceptions of teacher empathy, genuineness and high regard correlated with engagement. Statistically significant results were that a correlation existed between empathy and engagement and high regard and engagement. These results were presented at the 2017 OLC Innovate Conference. The e-mentor journal will feature this study in its next publication of the magazine/journal. The authors were invited to build on these research results at the 2018 OLC Innovate Conference. The authors were curious as to how instructors will convey empathy and high regard in there assignments, course design and feedback so that students would be better engaged in their classes. To accomplish this goal, this researcher chose to convey information and collect responses to these questions by facilitating a Conversation not Presentation Group at the 2018 Innovate Conference.
