Using a Design Based Implementation Research Approach to Reinforce a Climate of Innovation at UMUC

Abstract: 

This paper discusses the design based research approach used by the Center for Innovation in Learning and Student Success at the University of Maryland, University College. The paper puts forward one interpretation of DBR and how it can be applied by an innovation center working within a university. We begin by reviewing the literature on DBR, and highlighting what we believe to be the central features of the approach. We then present the model used by CILSS when designing and testing a pilot project. To illustrate the approach, we use the example of a recent pilot that uses adaptive learning in several UMUC courses

As the landscape in higher education continues to evolve and change, innovation pilots that require clear frameworks for evaluation and research design have become an opportunity for institutions to explore the opportunity to improve and dramatically change the academic learning environment. Designing effective, scalable and sustainable initiatives that originate from innovation pilots in higher education can be a challenge. Pilots that are statistically significant and show effectiveness in one academic setting may not work well when applied in other academic environments. We will discuss the implications of using and implementing design based research as a framework for the piloting. This session will discuss the design based research approach used by the Center for Innovation in Learning and Student Success at the University of Maryland, University College. We will discuss the implementation of Design Based research as a conceptual framework for the work we pilot in the Center for Innovation in Learning and Student Success.Our session will discuss the process and illuminate the principles of design-based implementation research as a relevant theoretical lens and methodological perspective. The framework will give specific insights to the elements included in our model: 1) The problem statement and research design, 2) The team 3) The iterations 4) The Challenges 5)Scaling up & Knowing When to Stop and 6) The evaluation.
