PitchLX: Breeding Innovation through Competition

Abstract:

One key to startup/business success is the ability to effectively pitch a new idea, product, or service to potential stakeholders. Shouldn’t educational institutions incorporate a similar competitive landscape to breed innovative thinking? Learn about Prospective Innovations in Teaching and Learning Experiences (PitchLX), an exciting new initiative being piloted at MSU Denver.

Extended Abstract:

MSU Denver’s PitchLX is a new event open to higher education professionals (faculty, staff, administrators, etc.), driven by a live pitch-off event. 7-10 select participants deliver two-minute pitches for existing or theorized innovative ideas which have the potential to significantly shape the future of teaching and learning with technology in higher education (moonshots welcome). Following each pitch, a panel of expert judges conduct a live Q&A/critique, and award points based on feasibilitycreativity, and overall delivery. Prizes are awarded, so innovative thinking and preparation is highly encouraged!

Once a PitchLX champion is crowned, a strategic, cross-disciplinary incubation team is established to help prototype and/or actualize the prospective innovation. This group may consist of, but is not limited to, instructional designers, technologists, faculty, students, and industry experts. For a year leading up to the subsequent PitchLX event, ideas are refined, piloted, tweaked, and either implemented or discarded. Moving forward, we hope that PitchLX will create a sustainable dynamic environment where big ideas are welcomed and innovative thinking is celebrated.

Join us in learning how you and your institution can adopt/adapt the PitchLX initiative to help establish an ongoing national culture of anticipated excitement, forward failure, and innovation in teaching and learining.
