Extended Abstract:

Goals

  • Attendees will learn five promising practices they may immediately apply to enhance the instructional design of their organization's courses.
  • Attendees will learn how to apply the strategies in professional practice and in combination with a program's course development process.

Description

Equally important to engaging, interactive, and quality online course content is the look, feel, and structure of an online course. When developing a course, it is critical we assume the learners have no online learning experience and integrate intentional design actions to remove all non-academic student barriers. The first impression is everything, and the instructional design of a course has the potential to either help or hurt a learner. What are five promising practices your course development team may apply to enhance the user interface learners encounter? We will expose attendees to strategies such as

  • a common course landing or homepage,
  • a uniformed module introduction and closing pages,
  • a concise and organized format for your instructor's weekly announcements,
  • and other standardized templates for discussion boards, activities, and assessments.

In addition, we will share an example course development process encompassing the design templates outlined, strategies to offset faculty resistance, and help you learn how to increase the confidence and comfort levels while students navigate your course. We will begin the session focusing on why the instructional design of a course is important, compare and contrast poor and excellent examples, and offer simple steps for your teams to get started. Why is the instructional design of a course similar to double aa batteries? Attend this session to hear the answer to the question and learn how to begin generating consistent and clear course components to reduce your students' cognitive load and ensure learners spend their time on experiencing course content rather than learning how to navigate your course.
