Driving Accessibility Initiatives From the Ground Up

Abstract:

In this session participants will learn about a three step process created in the Office of Distance Education and eLearning at The Ohio State University to drive accessibility forward from the ground up.

Extended Abstract:

From developing an infrastructure, to pushing outreach, to promoting empowerment, participants will learn what worked, what didn't work, and the strategic process behind the initiative plan that emerged from the Office of Distance Education and eLearning's (ODEE) desire to align itself with standards and best practices in accessibility and universal design. Jessica Phillips, the driver of this initiative in ODEE will share the principles of organizational change that helped to formulate her approach. Specific examples of what worked, what didn't work, and what she'd do next time will be shared alongside general best practices for building buy-in around any important initiative at any institution. Participants will walk away with tangible strategies to begin to apply in their own work, particularly those who desire to be change agents within their institutions. Whether participants are looking for specific accessibility strategies or general change management strategies, this presentation will provide concrete methods for both.
