Abstract:

Help students feel less isolated, bored, self-taught, missing teacher/peer interaction, and lacking personal connection. Tie the knot, marrying technology with intentional design to create active learning that is transformative. By incorporating tech tools and simple methods of engagement, online courses can thrive with little burden of divorce (promoting student retention!).

Extended Abstract:

Studies have shown that online learning, while its rewards are many, can present some challenges. Many students feel isolated, bored, self-taught, missing teacher/peer interaction, and lacking personal connection. Find out how to tie the knot, marrying technology with intentional design to create active learning that is transformative. By incorporating tech tools and simple methods of engagement, online courses can thrive with little burden of divorce (promoting student retention!).

Explore how the marriage of various techniques such as use of live/recorded feedback, interactive syllabi, online debates and e-learning authoring tools bring online courses to life.  Discover best practices for student support using intentional course design and instructor presence. Reap the benefits of tried and tested methods of using a mix of synchronous and asynchronous sessions to create a course and program community.

Delve into transformative learning, a vital part of graduate education (as well as other levels of scholarship). Witness how online debates are conducted to create new meaning and experiences for the learners. Understand ways to incorporate active learning into group work and make the knowledge “stick”.

Your students will thank you and promise “‘til death (or graduation) do us part”!

Strategies/Tools Discussed

  • Recorded Feedback
  • VoiceThread/recorded Discussions
  • Synchronous/asynchronous sessions
  • Online debates
  • Articulate Storyline e-learning modules
  • Group work

Objectives

Given the concepts of using technology to intentionally design online courses to be engaging and create transformative learning, attendees will:

  • Identify methods to create student engagement; teacher to student, student to student, content to student
  • Relate best practices to effectively use technology to create an active learning environment
  • Explore practical applications to conduct online debates and group work that fosters transformative learning
  • Develop ideas and plans to adapt their courses to include more student interaction and instructor presence.

Expected Outcomes

Upon completion of the workshop, attendees will be able to:

  • Demonstrate their knowledge by writing 2 new methods of creating student engagement they will add to their course
  • Assess their course need for interactive elements and suggest ways to create an active learning environment
  • Define transformative learning and the practical applications that help accomplish it online
  • Develop a strategy to integrate ideas and plans to include more student interaction and instructor presence

Methods of audience engagement:

  • Physically engaged through standing and clapping during a survey
  • Quiz at the end
  • Fill in the blanks on slides asking them to answer
  • Interactive Q&A/Handouts
  • Group work
