We engaged the students; now how about the instructor?

Abstract:

Models, research and anecdotal evidence address how to engage students in online learning environments, but little is written on how to create the same for the face-to-face instructor transitioning to teaching online. This discovery session examines what is missing for face-to-face instructors teaching online and ideas to address it.

Extended Abstract:

As the demand for online courses in traditional higher education institutions grows, so does the number of face-to-face faculty taking on the challenge of online instruction.  Research, teaching models and instructor experience inform the design of online courses and inspire ideas on how to engage students in an online learning environment. As educators we are focused on learning outcomes and a successful experience of our students, but have we forgotten the instructor experience? How can we achieve the same level of faculty satisfaction for teaching online that they experience in the face-to-face classroom. Does creating social, cognitive, teaching and instructor presence for the engagement of students likewise create an engaging environment for the instructor or is there something missing?

This session explores the idea of instructor engagement. Join the discussion as we examine preliminary findings from a faculty survey on instructor engagement and discuss ideas for filling the void many traditional face-to-face instructors feel as they transition to teaching in an online environment.
