Extended Abstract:

At the University of Central Florida, we began the adventure into personalized adaptive learning with a pilot program utilizing three different online courses.  Faculty chose RealizeIT as the preferred adaptive learning system for delivering the courses due to its immense learning analytical data provided and the ability to create or curate their own content. The nature of the personalized learning application made it imperative for us to examine the differences between traditional online learning vs. adaptive learning. This session will provide a brief synopsis of our pilot study, as well as, the lessons learned in the process.

This session will show you how to leverage what you already know about teaching online in order to rethink course design for adaptive learning. After a brief discussion on defining personalized adaptive learning, attendees will be polled on traditional design strategies and techniques. We will follow with a presentation on the adaptive learning characteristics which become part of the paradigm shift in teaching online.

We will introduce attendees to the five components of an adaptive online course that require a new look at teaching: Organization, Content Enrichment, Assessment Enhancement, Grading, and Course Management
