Abstract:

Where is the engagement indicator for your classes pointing? Would your students agree? Likely, it’s time to re-stock your toolbox with fresh array of innovative teaching methods and technology to promote student-content, student-student, and student-instructor engagement. We’ll present a variety of examples from Indiana University courses. Come re-stock your toolbox.

Extended Abstract:

Need some fresh ideas for increasing student collaboration and engagement in online classes (Student - Instructor, Student - Student, Student - Content)? Does it sometimes feel like your students are only online when an assignment is due?

Join Chérie and Julia as they explore options their Indiana University faculty are pioneering to increase collaboration and engagement in their online and hybrid classes.

We will share some of our ideas and showcase a variety of short video excerpts from our faculty on effective practices they have applied in their own online classes on how to:

  • engage students with their eText and resources

  • get anonymous weekly feedback from students

  • increase student engagement with content

  • increase student engagement with each other

  • increase instructor presence online

Where is the engagement indicator for your classes pointing? We will provide you with a basic rubric to self-assess your own courses.

Participants will have time to discuss ideas and tools that might be used to increase collaboration and engagement in small groups.  A basic table of tools and ideas will be provided to facilitate this discussion. We will then re-group to share any additional ideas with everyone so you take-away a well-stocked toolbox for future use.

From simple to more complex tools and ideas, there is something for everyone.
