Extended Abstract:

This session will reveal examples of  innovative digital transformation at two graduate business programs that are creating "21st century" approaches to online learning, addressing Roos' (2014)  call in the Harvard Business Review for a "Renaissance" in business education.  A cross-case analysis methodology was used to highlight the ways that two graduate MBA programs have developed approaches to  high quality online teaching that embody Roos' conditions including: 1. the importance of humanity-minded online teaching (putting ethics and the humanities back into business education); 2. individualized learning opportunities; and 3.  "hands-on" and "minds-on" pedagogy.  Using this framework, presenters will highlight ways that the two programs have approached faculty development to ensure high quality online teaching required for a "Renaissance" in 21st century business education. Several practical examples will be shown to demonstrate how faculty work with instructional designers to create coherent course designs and pedagogical approaches that increase communication and collaboration among students, integrate digitally recorded class sessions, and deepen online student learning through a variety of  digitally-enhanced strategies. Several examples will be shown of ways that faculty have integrated in their teaching uses of Voicethread (for asynchronous collaboration),  GoogleHangouts (for web conferencing) and Panopto (for lecture- and  screen- capture). Implications and challenges for cultivating high-quality online teaching in business education will be discussed.
