Abstract:

Today’s students have been raised in a fast-paced solution on demand, media-enriched, socially connected society. This interactive session will enable participants to evaluate and investigate issues educators are experiencing with educating today’s learners and will identify teaching strategies to maximize student performance in the virtual classroom.

Extended Abstract:

Many of us as educators have experienced challenges in captivating the attention of today’s students.  Millennials have had a significantly different technological upbringing than previous generations, which has sculpted their approach to learning.  This interactive session will navigate through issues and challenges in facilitating student success in the virtual classroom.

Current research in the field of psychology will be presented to explore what today’s students need to maximize learning.   We will consider options to modify in-class and online environments to best match the learning needs of Millennials.  Throughout the session, participants will engage in both interactive and round table discussions to explore issues we are currently facing, share strategies that are proving to be successful, and analyze possible solutions to meet the unique needs of today’s generation of learners.

Specific issues relating to suggestions for millennial engagement in online classes will be discussed, including the concept of micro learning.  The issues associated with increased academic dishonesty and plagiarism will be investigated and we will explore options to reduce incidents of plagiarism in the online environment.  Participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences and provide suggestions to the key issues faced by educators to improve student performance and knowledge retention.

Although the focus of the discussion is on higher education, all conference attendees are welcome to attend and will benefit from the shared insights on engaging Millennials.  Discussions will help both experienced faculty in teaching in an online environment, as well as new faculty that are entering the online mode of content delivery.
