Abstract:

In B@UNAM we've designed our courses centered on our students so they can build their own learning experience. Materials are designed so everyone gets the fundamentals of the discipline, but there is also a remedial way or a path for outstanding students. The learnign experience turns into a living community.

Extended Abstract:

B@UNAM is the online high school of Mexico's National Autonomous University (UNAM). We've attended thousands of students in all the country and mexicans that live throughout the world. During 2016, we've redisigned our courses so we can turn into a really innovative, motivating, fullfilling and whole learning experience. This new design is centered on the student. We want our students to really get hold of their learning process, to be self regulated and to always, during the whole two and a half years of high school, fell motivated and wanting to know and learn more. So we've redisigned our courses thinking of them as a living community, just as an architect builds structures that only come alive through the inhabitants. Thus, our courses are a living community, in which each student can create its own path. We start with a diagnosis that will give each one the general idea of what they know so they can follow the remedial path, the regular one, or get stimulus and extra information to learn and enjoy the course. But at the end, each and every student will finish the course with the fundamentals of the subject. Each unit of the course has different themes, exercises and activities that integrate fundamental knowledge and the habilities we want to inforce in the students.  We want every student to feel attracted to the course, this we do by designing interesting and motivating materials. Videos, inphographics, interviews, and original materials that can help students to really enjoy their learning experience and make the most of it, cognitively speaking.    For this presentatios we've chosen a Social Science course, specifically a History one, from first semester. The course is Poblamiento, migraciones y multiculturalismo, (Peopling, migrations and multiculturalism) Through it, we take the student through world history but seen by colonizations and migrations. Most importantly, studying the social, economic, cultural and political consequences of this human movings. In this presentation we will show our model with the example of Poblamiento. Wé will talk about the designing process of our model, the contento of the course, the three different paths designed for our students, and all the resources and materials that support all this.
