Communication between Instructional Designers and Subject Matter Experts is grounded in the need for clear communication and remains a critical element in online course design. We will explore how IDs and SMEs communication methods have evolved and provide participants with strategies and resources they can put into immediate practice.
The “Clean Up This Language”: Transform your Online Course Development Relationships with Clear Communication session is designed to be interactive and engage the audience through the use of live polling, character avatars/personas to highlight common subject matter expert characteristics, paired sharing, and large group discussion.
This session will positively contribute to the OLC Conference and those working in the online course design field by providing participants with relevant, practitioner-based strategies for enhancing the relationship between subject matter experts (SMEs) and instructional designers (IDs) when developing high quality courses for online delivery through clear communication.
We will also present and provide opportunity for discussion around the ways in which IDs and SMEs communication methods have evolved due to team members being geographically dispersed teams and our greater understanding of communication preferences.
Both anecdotal evidence as well as evidence from the professional literature will be introduced through a cast of common subject matter expert “character personas” that instructional designers may work with during the online course development process.
Participants will leave the session equipped with strategies, technology tools and resources that can immediately be put into practice to positively affect course development.
By the end of the session, participants will:
- Understand the SME and ID roles
- Acquire strategies for effective relationship building
- Obtain tools for working with geographically dispersed teams
