The ability to write clear and measurable learning objectives is important for instructional designers and faculty to ensure that course content aligns with desired learning outcomes and allows for effective assessment of student understanding. However, many struggle with creating effective learning objectives. The session will introduce ChatGPT, demonstrate how it can assist in writing objectives efficiently, provide strategies and examples of how ChatGPT-generated objectives can be used to enhance course design and evaluation, discuss benefits and limitations, and share best practices and prompts for using ChatGPT.
Writing clear and measurable learning objectives is a crucial task for instructional designers and faculty. Writing learning objectives helps to align the course content with the desired learning outcomes and allows instructors to assess students' understanding of the subject matter. However, many instructional designers and instructors struggle with writing effective learning objectives that accurately convey the intended learning outcomes.
To address this challenge, this poster session introduces the use of ChatGPT, a language model trained on a massive amount of text data, to generate clear and measurable learning objectives. We use the advanced ChatGPT guide model proposed by Anders (2023), including AI role, knowledge, task, output/format, and example, to create prompts for writing module-level learning objectives.
The poster session aims to cover the following areas:
- Introduce ChatGPT and its capabilities for generating clear and measurable learning objectives.
- Demonstrate how ChatGPT can assist instructional designers and faculty in writing learning objectives efficiently.
- Provide strategies and examples of how ChatGPT-generated objectives can be used to enhance course design and evaluation.
- Discuss the benefits and limitations of using ChatGPT for writing learning objectives
- Share best practices and generic prompts for using ChatGPT to generate clear and measurable objectives
Participants will leave this poster session with a better understanding of how ChatGPT can be used to write clear and measurable learning objectives and how to apply the generic prompts to specific disciplines. Additionally, we hope to stimulate discussion among the participants on the potential use of ChatGPT for instructional design in their respective institutions.
