Abstract:

The Clips app makes it easy to produce creative, captioned videos. In this workshop, participants will learn how to record videos, edit captions, and add special effects. We will also discuss how Clips can be used for teaching and learning. Please bring an updated iPad with the Clips app installed.

Extended Abstract:

Topic & Relevance: Videos are a valuable way to create a more humanized experience in online courses (Pacansky-Brock, Smedshammer, & Vincent-Layton, 2020). They can not only help foster connections between the instructor and students, but also help students connect with each other. When creating videos, it is important to ensure that they are accurately captioned for accessibility and other purposes. One tool that makes it easy to produce creative, captioned videos is the Clips app. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn the basics of how to produce videos in Clips, including how to record videos, edit the captions for accuracy, and add creative special effects. We will also discuss the many ways Clips can be used for teaching and learning. If you are a faculty member, instructional support specialist, or student who is interested in learning how to create engaging, accessible videos on the iPad, this session is for you!

Note: This is a hands-on workshop, and the facilitator will use an iPad to demonstrate the process. To follow along with the activities, participants should have their iPad fully charged and ready to use. Participants will need to install the Clips app from the App Store, and update their iPad to the latest operating system (iPadOS 16.4.1 or higher) before the session begins. This session is ideal for those who are comfortable with the basics of navigating and using an iPad.

Session Timeline & Interactivity: The session will proceed as follows:

(3 min.)- I will briefly introduce myself and share the session agenda and outcomes.

(5 min.)- To frame our discussion of the Clips app, I will begin by sharing relevant research about these topics: 1) the role of videos in humanizing the teaching process, 2) how videos support Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, and 3) the importance and benefits of captioning.

(12 min.)- I will provide an overview of the project that we will be creating together in Clips, and participants will watch a sample video I made that shows the final product. Afterwards, participants will share their observations, reactions, and questions about the sample video via Padlet.

*The remainder of this session will be hands-on, with participants following along on their iPads as we create a sample video together in Clips.*

(10 min.)- We will do some brief planning and preparation activities for the video project. Participants will brainstorm ideas for the project and use their iPads to take pictures of relevant objects.

(40 min.)- I will guide participants through the step-by-step process for recording videos in Clips, editing captions for accuracy, adding creative special effects, and saving/sharing videos. Participants will follow along on their devices.

(5 min.)- We will discuss practical ideas for how Clips can be used for teaching and learning (e.g., recording introductory videos, microlectures, course trailers, announcements, skills checks, and much more).

(5 min.) Participants will create an action plan for how they will use Clips in the future.

(10 min.)- I will provide additional resources, obtain feedback, and answer any remaining questions.

Learning Outcomes: The goals for this session are that participants will be able to:

(1) Use Clips to record videos that incorporate creative special effects.

(2) Edit captions to ensure accuracy.

(3) Plan ways to incorporate Clips into future teaching and learning activities.
