In this session, we'll explore tools, tips, and practical techniques for creating brief instructional videos that capture and convey your personality and expertise—including a practical, step-by-step workflow for planning, recording, and editing that will enable you to produce more engaging videos while working more efficiently.
Instructional videos are a vital component of many courses, providing us with a way to convey information and demonstrate tasks that would otherwise be confusing—or impossible to explain fully—in written text.
But video creation can present obstacles, even for the most seasoned educators. In the process of recording an instructional video, we may become mired in an attempt to look and sound flawless, and thus lose our unique “voice” and insight along the way.
Additionally, navigating the complexities of video editing and production can feel overwhelming—especially when creating videos intended for long-term use. Do we attempt to edit out everything we identify as an imperfection, or do we accept—and embrace—those imperfections as a part of our unique persona?
In this session, we'll explore tools, tips, and practical techniques for creating brief instructional videos that capture and convey an instructor's personality and expertise—videos that will help you bring more of your presence and voice to your online courses, thereby strengthening your connection with your learners, and strengthening your learners’ connection with the content.
Fortunately, creating engaging videos doesn’t require access to expensive software or equipment, nor does it involve a steep learning curve. Much of this session will focus on practical takeaways, including a detailed, step-by-step walk-through of my own workflow for using no-to-low-cost software for planning, scripting, recording, and editing. This process (which can be adapted for use with any software or app of your choice) will make it easier for you to produce more engaging videos while working more efficiently.
At multiple points during this session, participants will be invited to interact and share ideas, resources, and tips in a shared Google document. Time will be provided at the end for questions and answers, as well.
