Abstract:

Our institution uses the Civitas learning analytics system to monitor the "sweet spot" of mixed modality course loads. Student who take a mix of course modalities are more likely to carry a full credit load and persist to the next term. Inspired by the SUNY system which found a "tipping point" in graduation rates for students who took three face-to-face and two online courses (Shea & Bidjerano, 2018), the University Flexible Learning Council addressed access and quality problems with online courses, which enabled more students to optimize their schedules with a mix of on-campus and online courses. We will share three years of progress in championing mixed modality as the sweet-spot of flexibility because it enables students to build full-load schedules, selectively participate in face-to-face learning, while continuing in their programs.
