Orchestrated Process for Online Course Design

Abstract: 

We will describe a collaborative course design process involving faculty, administrators/project managers, online learning pedagogical specialists, and instructional technologists. In this session, we will explain how this approach fosters creative thinking and discuss how participants might involve pedagogy and technology experts in the course design process at their institution.

 
Extended Abstract: 

      Creating an effective online course requires a collaborative effort involving the knowledge of different stakeholders. Each stage of the process, from analysis and design to development, testing, implementation, and evaluation, requires a different mindset, skills, and expertise. Although many educational institutions have set up explicit guidelines for the development of online courses, in many cases, issues like lack of instructional design support, insufficient technology planning, and lack of understanding of online pedagogy have hampered the course development process. (Donaldson, 2020).

      In order to assist faculty in designing an effective online course, presenters of this session utilized a collaborative approach involving multiple stakeholders including faculty/subject matter experts (SMEs), an administrator/project manager, an online learning pedagogical specialist from the teaching and learning center, and a technologist from the university’s information technology department. This collaborative approach effectively supports faculty in designing an engaging online course through a four-month design process.

      In this session, presenters will briefly describe their process including the advantages and challenges of working collaboratively across four organizational units. Presenters will share resources including the course design timeline, course design module templates, course design rubrics. Participants will be encouraged to consider ways to involve pedagogy and technology experts at their institutions in creating rich online learning experiences.
