Special Session:
Diversity & Inclusion
Abstract:

During this session, we journey together to explore how equity, diversity, and inclusion can directly be incorporated into course design best practices in an effort to begin to address the inequities and challenges faced by many marginalized populations and brought to light through societal events.

Extended Abstract:

We plan to engage the audience in activities and discussions throughout the entire session. We’ll begin by having attendees introduce themselves with “I am” statements and build from this as we delve deeper into the topic. Attendees will see how we have modified our design approach to incorporate an equity, diversity, and inclusion goal into the core best practices we espouse and adhere to for course development. Participants will explore and ultimately share how they might modify an actual learning situation. They will work with peers to develop solutions to scenarios where they are immersed in a situation related to EDI in higher education.  All attendees will walk away with a plan of how they can apply the concepts going forward.

Attendees will take away the following:

  • Identify key attributes of themselves and others and how to account for such diversity in a learning situation.

  • Review EDI resources related to online teaching and learning.

  • Reflect on teaching and learning activities while using an EDI lens.

  • Develop solutions to scenarios where you are immersed in a situation related to EDI in higher education.
