Abstract:

This session will focus on a gamified professional development experience specifically engaging first-time teaching faculty at the institution. Participants will be able to engage in a similar gamified experience used to create this professional development.

Extended Abstract:

This session will focus on how a gamified professional development opportunity was used to provide continued support to first time online teaching faculty at the institution. Times and current conditions have changed providing an opportunity to reimagine the priorities and professional developments this center can offer. By reimaging the training experience for our new faculty, the idea of including gamified elements was created. The idea of using games and gaming elements as a pedagogical method has been increasing over the last few years (Vlachopoulos & Makri, 2017). This session will provide participants multiple opportunities to engage with the presenters and each other. As a reference to the title, this session will follow a format where participants will be able to choose their own adventure. Different concepts and gaming elements will be presented and depending on which elements the audience selects, will determine the path of the presentation. Regardless of which elements are chosen, all important concepts related to a gamified experience will be reviewed. Based on a similar design model that was used to develop a gamified experience, the presentation will explore the concepts of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Topics that can be selected during the presentation will focus on Player Types, Gamification Mechanics, Gamification Dynamics, Gamified System Structure, LMS used, and Evaluation of the Experience. The presentation will also focus on the Self Determination Theory concepts of Autonomy, Competence, and Relatedness as these concepts are integral for a gamified experience. A review of the professional development opportunity that was created will also be showcased in this presentation. At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to describe general definitions and concepts in reference to gamification and apply concepts to begin building a gamified faculty development experience.  This session will allow participants to collaborate with one another by engaging in a gamified experience and sharing resources. This session will also provide opportunities to discuss equity and inclusivity specifically related to access of materials. Based upon a design model and the Self-Determination Theory, this session will allow participants to understand the evidence used to develop this presentation and apply the concepts of gamified learning to a faculty development opportunity.
