CanvEscape: Using Canvas Features to Set Up a Carnival Themed Escape the Room Experience

Abstract: 

An interactive, carnival themed escape the room session, immersing participants in a gamified Canvas course using badging, requirements, and Mastery Paths. The topic of learning for this experience will be focused on participating in the Canvas Community to grow your PLN.

Extended Abstract: 

Attendees will experience an interactive, carnival themed escape the room session, immersing participants in a gamified Canvas course. Not a Canvas user?  You can still gain some insight on techniques to gamify and problem solve using tools that may be available to you.  The topic of learning for this experience could include any content you teach, but will be focused on participating in the Canvas Community to grow your PLN. Showcasing the use of modules, Mastery Paths, and awarding some carnival themed badges using Badgr will be a few of the ways digital tools can be integrated into this experience.  A detailed explanation of how the course was put together will be included...once you escape!  For the best user experience, bring your computer. The first portion of this session will be a brief introduction to the course and some concepts integrated for the user’s experience.  The rest of the time you will be attempting to escape the carnival while experiencing Canvas features, problem solving, and engaging in content.  You might have so much fun you won’t even realize you are learning!

Learning Objectives:

1) Learn about and experience features in Canvas that can encourage student engagement.  If you are not a Canvas user, to explore how some of the features experienced in this session might be integrated within other Learning Management Systems as well as non-digital options.

2) Explore how various digital tools can be purposefully used together to enhance learning and create an engaging experience for your learners.

3) Reflect on your own current instructional environment and learner experiences and theorize new ways to engage your learners specific to your situation.
