Abstract:

Alternative assignments create opportunities to help reticent students feel more at home with materials and in online classes and to meet course objectives and university goals.

Extended Abstract:

The inclusion of alternative assignments to set classroom design can increase the feeling of inclusivity to those students who may feel out of their element, either because they are older, have not attended school for a while, are in a specialized field seeking advancement through obtaining an advanced degree, feel reticent in online classes, or any other number of reasons.  This session will offer insights into offering an alternative assignment that fulfills course objectives and larger university goals while making students feel more at home with the material of the course and with their abilities to accomplish objectives and goals.  While specific to one course offering, the principles involved apply to any field, any course offering that has assignments.
