In this session, facilitators share efficient methods of blueprinting the design of an online course space to introduce participants to effective practices for online learning space development. The workshop materials and resources utilize open standards and practices so will be available to session participants for application in their own contexts.
In this session the workshop facilitators will share efficient methods of blueprinting the design of an online course space, to introduce participants to effective practices for online learning space development. The workshop materials and resources utilize open standards and practices so will be made available to all participants of this session for application in their own contexts.
The Blueprint workshop is a starting point to help you to create key structures that positively impact teaching and learning. These include planning, building, delivering, and proving communication and feedback opportunities. The facilitators will work with participants through these aspects in the first 30 minutes.
Planning - like any design blueprint - is key to a more efficient building of your online space. Using the provided blueprint planning document and together we will develop a sample course module using the template in the final 15!
We will provide you the resources and templates shared within the workshop. With your planning document and resources ready to import, you are ready to build your online course space. Import the template package and start editing. We provided a set of modules for either a thematically-structured course or a weekly-structured course, as well as a set of discussions you can customize to meet your needs. Templates are provided so that you can build your own course pages, keeping the same look and feel across the entire learner experience. The most basic reward for the use of the blueprint structures will be the consistency your learners experience throughout your course and, ideally, throughout their time in your program.
Information is provided about key structures available to help organize your course resources, incorporate communication channels, and encourage the giving/receiving of feedback. Once built, these will help you manage the space to interact with learners, provide actionable feedback in a timely manner, and assess the degree to which course outcomes are achieved.
This workshop is part of our university’s faculty development catalogue and we will share our approach to development, and help you to identify how you can also embed it (or similar) into your own institutional faculty development system. Workshop discussion will help all participants to explore methods which support faculty where they are currently at, in ways that fit complex systems of development, and practices that encourage micro and applied learning and mentorship.
Relevance: The session will be most relevant to new faculty members, or those whose 2020 online experience was new to them. The session will also benefit administrators, and deans who are planning on improved program level practices in technology-enabled teaching and learning when they return to their place-based universities post-pandemic.
Interactivity: Participants will draft a blueprint for one module in their current courses, or a course they are considering for future delivery. This can also be micro- and field-based training and development also.
All participants will leave having thought pragmatically about critical online structures which have a positive impact on teaching and learning (in blended and/or online courses/programs), use the most relevant of these structures to redraft the ‘flow’ of one learning cycle in their course/program, and take away digital files which can be important and customized to help provide your learners with a course ‘feel’ consistent with your institute brand and social structures which build community amongst course members.
