This presentation will examine the use of teacher-led video communication in an online learning environment. This study is being utilized with undergraduate nursing students to determine the impact of video announcements on student learning experience.
This presentation will outline and demonstrate the use of Kaltura Capture in an online nursing pharmacology course. The course instructor has worked with an educational technologist to explore how video can enhance instructor presence and student outcomes. Together the authors planned a pilot study and prior to project implementation, institutional IRB approval was granted. The presenters will review the technology in the course and disseminate project data for two-terms.
It is known that instructor presence is essential in teaching, but engaging learners and promoting a sense of community in online educational platforms can be challenging. Online learning can contribute to feelings of isolation for students, which can impact student learning. When social presence is enhanced by a 'real person' in an online learning environment, this can have a direct impact on academic standing. The goal of the project is to apply technology aimed to promote the quality of the student experience and postitive learning outcomes.
