Abstract:

Can in-house professional development be as effective as attending conferences? Why, yes it can! Find out how the technologies and tools you have can be reimagined as vehicles to deliver innovative and valuable professional development and faculty training.

Extended Abstract:

Home grown professional development can be interesting and effective. Attending conferences isn’t the only avenue to innovative professional development and faculty training. Using what you have- learning management systems (LMS), website development tools, or presentation programs-is an affordable alternative to expensive conferences.

We want to know the “latest and greatest” trends in our fields, but how can this happen on a limited professional development budget? The answer, look in-house for alternative ways to deliver those pieces of information. Pursing a level of excellence through innovation doesn’t stop with a tight professional development budget. By using those tools available, your professional development and training will continue.

Our institution’s professional development program relies on using what we have to deliver faculty development and training. The LMS is a mainstay of our professional development program. Instructors have a specific tab, “Innovation Café” on their LMS view. This tab includes LMS user guides, faculty share out pages, and best practices for teaching online and face-to-face classes. Inexpensive approaches don’t compromise the integrity of an innovative professional development program.

Audience Engagement

The audience will be engaged with an interactive question and answer activity. The speaker will ask attendees to write three questions before the presentation. Participants will tick off questions as/if they are covered in the presentation. Unanswered questions will be submitted via a polling application. Attendees then upvote which questions they find the most relevant. The three questions with the highest votes are addressed by the presenter.
