Abstract:

It is important and necessary for any educational institution to be able to administer and view analytics on their Learning Management System. Analytics and reporting services  can provide an insight into the effectiveness of the LMS through the provision of reports based on real-time data, tracking learners' activity, progress, and competencies.  The Intelliboard plugin extracts the statistical data collected in the LMS and presents it on a single dashboard as easy-to-read, aesthetic and printable charts, graphs, and formatted reports.

Extended Abstract:

Educational institutions and communities everyday need data to assist them on how they can improve their teaching and learning strategies in real time.   They want information from their Learning Management System presented to them in an easy to understand format with a series of clicks and not through time consuming indept searches.  The information displayed must be seen in various formats to help the user reason about data in an understandable and practical way.  Intelliboard can achieve this.  It is a plugin that can extract statistical data from Moodle and present it in a single dashboard in the format of graphs, charts and formatted reports.  The data displayed can then be taken to devise effective strategies and decisions on how well their Moodle server is serving their learners.

Students persisting to completion of their educational goals is a key gauge of student success. Learner retention is a key focus for all institutions.  Intelliboard can provide data from several points of focus to identify learners in jeopardy.  The Learner Success and Progress report provides key data for learner performance within courses and will display the learners cumulative course progress.  Another useful report is how to identify Assignments that are past due. The assignments listed in the Assignment Submission Status display the status of the report and includes past due assignments according to the due date specified within the LMS.   The report will populate with the past due assignments. These students can them be communicated.

The best LMS is only as good as the users who are using it…..even at all.  The online learning environment requires an engaged learner to be successful. IntelliBoard can provide multiple reports, analytics and notifications that keep learners focused, and provide data that can impact an institutions learners methodologies.  The User Engagement report can be used to evaluate learner engagement through time spent in the site, courses, and activities immediately; affording the ability to conduct long and short-term adjustments for maximum success.  The Course Content Utilization report displays the duration of time learners spend on specific course content or activities.

Another big difficulty educational institutions face when monitoring their e-learning use is knowing how educators interact with the platform and their respective learners. IntelliBoard has a number of analytic tools that allow you to overcome this including ‘teaching activity’ and ‘teaching performance’.

Level of Participation:

This session is structured in the format of a workshop with each person being provided approximately five minutes to introduce their thoughts on how analytics can improve the use of a Learning Management System. Following this they will then choose an analytic report and identify which fields should be included in the data.

Session Goals:

At the end of this presentation the audience will be able to understand how the use of analytics can improve decision making in a Learning Management System.  They will be able to recognise the importance of data needed in order to increase user engagement and provide comprehensive reports and feedback. Attendees will also be able to appreciate that data visualisation, reporting and analytics are  important components of online learning strategies and educational business decisions.
