Abstract:

HyFlex courses combine online and face-to-face instruction simultaneously into one course. Students choose how they participate in any given class meeting - online, face-to-face, or synchronous via web-conferencing. “HyFlex Course Development Guidelines” help faculty tackle course design, including requirements and templates. Learn about our model, ask questions, share answers.

Extended Abstract:

HyFlex courses combine online and face-to-face instruction simultaneously into one single course section, with the mode of instruction determined by each individual student. Students are able to choose how to participate in any given class meeting - online, face-to-face, or synchronous attendance via web-conferencing. The flexible format allows students the freedom to participate around their life schedules, which contributes to on-time completion, retention, and student success.

To ensure students make an informed choice regarding modality options, HyFlex courses must include detailed schedules and technical information. The need to help faculty tackle course design and implementation triggered the creation of an institution-wide document, “HyFlex Course Development Guidelines”, which describes how HyFlex courses should be organized in the LMS, lists required elements, and provides templates for course design. The HyFlex Team also created web content to clarify the modality for the students, and a list of recommendations for our Provost to consider.

Session participants will gain an understanding of the complexities of HyFlex design and how they can lay the groundwork for thoughtful implementation on their campuses. Participants will be asked to share models they have tried and brainstorm courses they might convert to HyFlex.
