Abstract:

Adaptive learning provides self-paced, flexible learning paths that provide students with different experiences while reaching the same goals. Engage in a course-mapping activity illustrating the nonlinear nature of adaptive learning and learn about the design and effectiveness of an adaptive online course. Compare experiences, concerns, and questions about adaptive technologies.

Extended Abstract:

Adaptive learning has been gaining attention because it provides for self-paced, flexible learning paths that vastly differ from the typical method of teaching in online or blended classrooms. Courses designed with adaptive technologies provide each student with a different experience while ultimately helping them to reach the same learning goals. Participants in this session will have the opportunity to share their experiences with adaptive technologies and learn about our experience leveraging adaptive courseware to redesign an online General Chemistry I course utilizing both OER and instructor-generated resources.

This course redesign provides learners with a personalized pathway that includes scaffolding and redirection to address their individual knowledge gaps. The adaptive platform also allows a heavy emphasis on student practice of both qualitative and quantitative concepts, while bolstering student-content and student-instructor interaction. During our session, we’ll discuss the platform that made this course possible, the elements that were deployed, and the effect that this new technology had on student performance. Participants will be given the opportunity to interact with these concepts via a course-mapping activity to illustrate the non-linear nature of adaptive learning.

Based on this evidence, this concept holds great potential for delivering engaging, high-quality courses to help students succeed and enjoy their educational experience. Session participants will be able to compare their experiences, concerns, and questions about adaptive learning and technologies to gain a better understanding of how these techniques could be executed in a variety of disciplines.
