Extended Abstract:

This research project examines graduate student perceptions of strengths in online course content, activities, and multimedia tools. A strengths based evaluation/change management model will be used as a base reference for designing the data collection survey. Focusing on strengths can help impact program growth in a positive direction.

There have been many different types of studies that focus on online course design and online instructional methods that have identified elements that have shown to improve online course satisfaction and retention. This study is designed to examine graduate student perceived strengths in online course content and multimedia tools to provide data that can be used for enhanced course and content design. Student learning and satisfaction are important aspects related to persistence, and failing to meet student expectations and learning needs can ultimately put student retention in jeopardy.

This study will use a strengths based evaluation/change management model to help guide the creation of a survey for data collection. Strength models like SOAR analysis can be used for any industry or organization but it has roots in the business field. It can help to define the strengths of a program or organization and can aid in the development of a plan for forward motion and growth that revolves around building on strengths. The SOAR model keeps the focus on proven strengths and future growth rather than looking behind to determine the weak aspects of a program, or in this case online course components that are perceived as weak. The survey results from the study will help to provide insight into positively perceived online design methods, multimedia tools, and course content that can be a benefit to online student learning and the overall online student experience.
