This session will explore the use of virtual reality to deliver an interprofesisonal health assessment - from intial acute issue to hospitalization. Additonally, we will cover the processes used to develop a custom virtual clinical platform that gives the students the opportunity to safely engage in a healthcare scenario while practicing skills, processes, and procedures. Additionally we will cover the pilot data.
This session will go through the development of the interprofessional virtual healthcare framework. We will explore the framework for the VR cases developed by an interprofessional team from the academic health colleges (AHC) (College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, College of Medicine and Allied Health – Social Work). We have developed the scripts and the platform for a VR IPE cardiac patient case. Students from the AHC will be recruited to go through the virtual experience in the fall term. The purpose of this project was to design, build, and evaluate a virtual clinical experience platform for nursing, medicine, pharmacy, and allied health students enrolled in on-site programs. Furthermore, this project aligns with the goals of the University of Cincinnati’s “Creating Our Third Century” Plan by LEVERAGING RESEARCH: Solving urgent real-world problems in safe virtual spaces with faculty and student researchers; REIMAGINING THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE: Re-imagining the University experience with virtual and augmented reality technologies; and EXCELLENCE IN ELEARNING: Using innovative immersive technology and 21st century learning tools to create experiential learning opportunities that resonate with the learners and leaders of tomorrow. An important aspect of this project is the interprofessional effort of the Colleges of Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacy, and Allied Health. In addition, this virtual reality simulation platform offers a cost-effective method of knowledge and skill building, which is available to anyone with an internet-connected computer; thereby, substantially increasing the availability of training and educational experiences that can be tailored to the learning needs and outcomes of diverse health professions students.
