Abstract:

Do I need a Resource Center?  This interactive session will show you how to design a central place for students/faculty to access information that is not specifically related to a class. Include everything from faculty bios to graduation information and career paths. Design and content ideas will be the focus.

Extended Abstract:

Most schools have a portal in which general school-wide information is accessible, however, what usually lacks is a central place students can go for department-specific information. This session will present several different resource centers that the Instructional Design team at TCS Education System has created.  The audience is expected to be designers as well as administrators, department chairs, and faculty. These departmental centers focus on the content and information specific to that department. The centers were designed in the Canvas LMS.  The design team worked with department chairs and faculty to help create a central space which students can access resources such as APA formatting tips, Time management skills, academic advising contacts, information on internships and career services and much more. The speaker will highly engage with the audience to discuss if they have these types of centers for students and to share ideas with each other on what can go into these centers and how to engage the students to ensure they are using the center.  The idea is not to just present, but to discuss how these types of resource centers can benefit students as well as faculty. The audience will come away will new ideas on how they can make departmental information more accessible for students and faculty.
